Dell Precision 17 7730

If someone had a gun to my head and asked me to describe the Dell Precision 17 7730 mobile workstation in 8 words, I would say, “it’s a high-end desktop packed inside a laptop.”  And most experts would agree with me. Moreover, I believe you will also agree with me by the end of this article.

What you are going to read in this article!

Dell Precision 17 7730: Your Secret Weapon for 2022!

Today, we are looking at one of my favorite laptops in Dell’s precision range. This mobile workstation laptop packs a serious punch that leaves many professionals stunned and satisfied. This is an ideal machine for all kinds of professions, including:

  1. Engineering,
  2. Graphic design,
  3. High-end data modeling,
  4. Virtual-reality content creation,
  5. Video and photo editing.
  6. Gaming
  7. And many more…

The Precision 17 7730 somehow manages to combine the joys of peak performance with the convenience of portability. It’s a true testament that professionals who frequently work between their home and office can maximize their productivity by buying this mobile workstation; instead of buying two desktop PCs in different locations, which are hard to synchronize.

This is a laptop for people who expect the best from their machines.

Dell Precision 17 7730 Specs

The Dell Precision 17 7730 is available in multiple different configurations. For example, you can get the Dell Precision 7730 i9 processor or the Dell Precision 7730 Xeon processor. In fact, you have 5 processor options, which are:

  1. Intel Core i5-8300H
  2. Intel Core i7-8750H
  3. Intel Core i7-8850H
  4. Intel Xeon E-2186M
  5. Intel Core i9-8950HK

While your GPU options are similarly broad, including the following:

  1. AMD Radeon Pro WX 4150 (4GB GDDR5)
  2. NVIDIA Quadro P3200 (Laptop, 6GB GDDR5)
  3. NVIDIA Quadro P4200 (Laptop, 8GB GDDR5)
  4. NVIDIA Quadro P5200 (Laptop, 16GB GDDR5)
  5. Intel UHD Graphics 630.

In light of this, the model we used during this review had much more modest specs, which you can find below in a brief specs (specifications) overview:

HardwareSpecification
ProcessorIntel Core i7-8850H
RAM16GB DDR4
GraphicsAMD Radeon Pro WX 4150 (4GB GDDR5)
Storage512GB SSD
Screen17.3″, Full HD Display (1920 x 1080), IPS

As you can see, our own specs were great, but they didn’t showcase the best version of the Precision 17 7730. To harness the fullest potential of this beast, you’re going to need to shell out extra fodder… and it will still be worth it.

Now, suppose you are looking to get the very best display capability. In that case, you should opt for the Precision 17 7730 that comes with a 17.3” UltraSharp Anti-Glare, UHD IGZO Display capable of supporting resolutions of up to 3840×2160. Alternatively, you can also get resolutions of 1600×900 and 1920×1080, respectively. Moreover, this mobile workstation laptop is a visual professional’s secret weapon as it enables you to work in better than real-life detail with support for 8K resolution and HDR via a DisplayPort 1.4 single cable.

In terms of memory, the Precision 7730 came with 16 GB of memory, which is enough for most computing tasks. However, suppose your applications require even more memory. In that case, you can easily upgrade your laptop to a maximum of 128 GB of RAM. In addition, this beast also comes with a storage system that can support four storage devices. For example, 4 SSDs (M.2 PCIe), or 3 SSDs (M.2 PCIe) and one 2.5” SATA SSD/HDD drive. Altogether, the Precision 17 7730 can support an astonishing maximum storage capacity of 8 TB. Making it one of the best and largest in the whole industry.

Now, Dell, in its seemingly infinite wisdom, chose to let customers choose the GPU or CPU they like by providing multiple configurations with either AMD, Intel, or Nvidia graphics cards or processors. This was a smart move on their part because they smartly sidestepped the whole Nvidia vs. AMD vs. Intel fiasco and let the fanboys choose for themselves. And so far, it seems to be working.

The last feature I will talk about is the keyboard. The Precision 17 7730 keyboard is backlit, catering to those dark-room / night owl users who need it. It also adds a nice extra touch to a freakish laptop that deceptively looks bland and common at first glance. Moreover, the keyboard includes a trackpoint, which users can use as an alternative to the touchpad.

Dell Precision 17 7730 Gaming, Build, and Performance

Although the laptop rather looks ordinary, don’t be fooled. It is built with the best of materials, including lightweight premium materials like:

  • Anodized Aluminium.
  • Magnesium Alloy.
  • Carbon Fiber.

Moreover, even though the gigantic 17.3” screen size makes it bigger than typical laptops, it is still portable. It can be easily carried around without noticeable discomfort – provided you have the right bag.

As for performance, our model with a relatively average configuration of an  Intel Core i7-8850H processor, 16GB DDR4 memory, and a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro WX 4150 (4GB GDDR5) GPU was able to run memory and computing-intensive apps like 3D Rendering software smoothly. Even the most troublesome apps will still run like a breeze if you max out the configurations of 128 GB RAM, Intel® Xeon E-2186M, and 8 TB of storage. Furthermore, besides apps, you can also smoothly play most current games or titles at max settings or very close to it.

Of course, you will need to have your charger close by for prolonged gaming or work sessions.

Now let’s address the elephant in the room – the weight of the Dell Precision 17 7730 laptop. The 7730 laptop is not for the faint-hearted. It starts at a whopping 3.17kg or 6.99 lbs. So you’ll surely need an appropriate ergonomic carrying bag for hassle-free and pain-free portability.

Finally, let’s talk about the Dell Precision 17 7730 Price. If you want to buy this one-of-a-kind laptop fit for kings, you are going to need to dig deep into your wallet. After all, all good things come at a price. Expect an entry price of around US$ 2,500 for a Dell Precision 17 7730 laptop with an average configuration. If you need extra juice, then expect a price of over US$ 3,500.
